4 Ways To Degrease An Oily Face

As a teenager, dealing with oily skin most likely centered around preventing acne.

However, as an adult, knowing how to deal with oily skin is a fundamental step to the larger universe of men’s grooming. It could mean the difference between a greasy face and a clean, matted look. That’s not to say your facial oils are bad for you; in fact, the naturally produced oils, known as sebum, is important to the health of your skin, but too much can clog pores, especially if your skin is dirty.

Every man can bring balance to his pores by following these four basic steps. Let these be the foundation for a healthier face!

Know How To Cleanse

A good facial cleanser is essential to flushing away dirt, dead skin, toxins, and excess sebum that has accumulated on your face throughout the day. Ideally, you should cleanse your face at least two times a day. The first time would be when you wake up, whether you do so in the shower or at the sink. Your body will have produced plenty of sebum while you slept, and a clean face will prepare your face as a blank canvas for your skincare regimen. It will definitely be beneficial for shaving, as a clean face can help prevent skin irritation and clogged pores.

Washing your face at night is essential to flushing away the dirt, dead skin, toxins, and excess sebum that has accumulated on your face throughout the day. Touching your dirty face to your pillowcase is a tad gross, and you also run the risk of clogging your pores even more with all the gunk that hasn’t been cleaned off. If you fit in a sweaty activity during the day, feel free to wash your face a third time! Your skin definitely will benefit from the extra care.

Tone It Down

After cleansing, it’s time to even things out. Applying toner will help balance your skin’s pH levels, which is an important first step to preventing excess oil production without drying your skin. You can apply toner to your entire face by patting in a few drops to your palms or doing the same with a cotton pad.

Don’t Be Afraid To Moisturize

Moisturizing may seem like the most contradictory step, especially since your goal is to be less oily. However, contrary to what many of us feel, moisturizing does not result in more oil production. In fact, moisturizing is essential to preventing excess sebum. If your skin is too dry, your pores will produce more oil to compensate, and you could end up worse than where you started. In colder seasons, a moisturizer will be even more important to keeping your pores hydrated and healthy.

There are instances where a moisturizer can be too heavy for the skin, namely in warmer climates. A serum is a bit lighter on the skin and absorbs more easily than a moisturizer. Depending on the climate, you’ll be applying one or the other, or even both!
