Which Style Is Right For My Face?

Looking to change your look, but don’t want to do anything too drastic like a new haircut? Maybe you’re just tired of people telling you that you have a baby-face and you’re wanting to sport a beard that makes you look older and more sophisticated. It could just be that you’ve been thinking about growing out your beard, but aren’t sure what would look best on you without being too much maintenance. Don’t worry—at 1924 Fine Men’s Salon, our staff is ready to welcome you in for a consultation and assist you on creating, caring for, and grooming the perfect beard that works for your face shape and desired your maintenance level. Below, read about all the different types of popular beards our team of experts has worked with in the past.

Stubble Beard

What is a stubble beard?

A stubble beard is what happens when you’ve stopped shaving for 24 hours. Colloquially known as a five o’clock shadow, this stubble tends to appear a few hours after you’ve stopped shaving, but, depending on each person’s hair growth speed, it can take two to five days for it to look full and good.

Does it suit my face shape?

Depending on how the hair grows in, this may or may not be the ideal shape for you. Some men have beards that grow evenly around their cheekbones, jawline, mustache, and chin areas whereas other men’s genetics create a patchy beard at the beginning. We recommend this type of beard for those whose beard grows in fully and evenly. The best characteristic of this beard is the shading effect that creates a strong jawline and defined cheekbones, so if you’ve got a rounder face—this is the ideal beard for you.

How much care does it require?

This beard is probably the most low-maintenance beard on our list. We recommend using a trimmer with a guard that’s 1 mm – 3 mm (depending on how long you want your stubble and the brand of trimmer you select) and trim your beard twice a week instead of daily. This way, you’ll maintain that just-woke-up-like-this look to a tee.

Short Beard

What is short beard?

A short beard is a beard whose facial hair length reaches about a half an inch. To reach this length, again, depending on how fast your follicle growth is, you’ll need to grow your beard out for five to ten days.

Does it suit my face shape?

If you haven’t taken the time to grow your short beard out, this would be the ideal time to find out if it works for you—allow us to explain. The short beard doesn’t really ‘look good’ depending on your face shape as much as it does depend on how it grows in: patchy or full. If you’ve got a patchy beard, unfortunately, the short beard will just accentuate how the empty spaces in your face. For this reason alone, the short beard should be sported by men with a full beard.

How much care does it require?

This beard is a low-maintenance beard (though not as low maintenance as the short beard). We recommend using a trimmer with a guard that’s 3 mm – 5 mm (depending on the brand of trimmer you select) and trim your beard every two weeks. To everyone around you, you’ll look like you just freshly landed from your two-week vacation without a care in the world.

Medium Beard

What is medium beard?

A medium beard is that is grown in a time span of two to three months. You’ll be able to determine if you have a medium beard by the fact that your beard’s hair follicles are moving away from your face, thus creating a more three-dimensional look.

Does it suit my face shape?

A medium beard works well with those who have a round face or a small chin. Essentially, what the medium beard does, is have an elongating effect to your face. It creates the illusion of a longer, more slender face. So, if you’ve struggled with a cheeky face or a non-pronounced chin, a medium beard would be the stepping stone to changing the shape of your face with minimal work.

How much care does it require?

This is the length of hair follicle at which point your beard becomes more high maintenance. Think of It similarly to the hair at the top of your head, only more special because it’s literally on your face. In order to preserve the healthy look of your beard, you’ll have to shampoo and condition it every three to four days. You’ll also have to begin using beard oil to keep the hair follicles nourished and glossy. To maintain the shape of your beard, visit one of our stylists for a trimming session every couple of weeks so that they can retain the length of your beard and clean up your cheek line properly.

Long Beard

What is long beard?

A long beard is a full and lengthy beard that goes past your collarbone (think Hagrid from Harry Potter, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, Tormund from Game of Thrones, and Pai Mei from Kill Bill Vol. 2). To grow this bad boy you’ll need six to eight months!

Does it suit my face shape?

Wrong question. For this funky-fun beard, you’ll have to ask yourself—does this suit my personality? This lengthy beard is not for the meek and mild. This beard is for those who have a strong personality, a playful persona, and confidence to boot. Are you bold enough to exhibit this type of beard? If so, go for it!

How much care does it require?

Your visits to your stylist will be fewer than the visits to maintain the medium beard (every month give or take a few days), but you’ll want to keep up with your shampoo, condition, and beard oil applications every day. This will not only support the healthiness and look of your beard; it will help you maintain the cleanliness of your face!

Bespoke Beard

What is bespoke beard?

A bespoke beard is a full (but neatly trimmed) beard whose shape has literally been tailor-made for your face. This is no longer a beard where you only have to keep up with regular trimming—since this bespoke beard is crafted around your hair growth patterns and for your face shape, it’s time to bring in the big guns to help you style it and preserve the shape. Two to three months are required to complete the best shaping possible.

Does it suit my face shape?

Well, that’s pretty much the idea of a bespoke beard. In this instance, we’re not trying to determine whether your face shape works with a certain type of beard but rather making the beard work with your specific facial features. The way it grows in will also determine how the shape changes as it gets longer.

How much care does it require?

This beard is probably the most high-maintenance beard on our list. Similar to the medium beard in maintenance and length, in order to preserve the healthy look of your beard, you’ll have to shampoo and condition it every three to four days. Again, you’ll also have to begin using beard oil to keep the hair follicles healthy and sleek. To maintain the shape of your beard, visit one of our stylists for a trimming session every couple of weeks to retain the length of your beard and clean up your cheek line properly.
